The OTR TrueFreight Brief is your monthly supply-focused analysis of what is truly happening in the logistics market.

Freight rate analysis split between Flatbed, Reefer, and Dry Van.

Freight Rates by Equipment

Key Takeaway: The market finally paused, but pricing remains historically strong.

All three equipment types moved lower in August, ending the streak of monthly gains that defined much of 2026. Dry van and flatbed saw the larger pullbacks, while reefer remained relatively stable. The bigger story is that rates remain dramatically above year-ago levels. Even after August's decline, each equipment type is still up nearly 40% year over year, suggesting the market is normalizing from peak summer conditions rather than entering a prolonged downturn.

Rate Per Mile Regional Volatility

Key takeaway: Regional divergence continues to widen.

August's map shows cooling spreading across much of the southern half of the country, while pockets of strength remain concentrated in the Pacific Northwest and Northeast. National averages may suggest a softer market, but conditions vary dramatically by region. One potential driver is the seasonal transition away from peak produce activity in southern markets. Regardless of the cause, brokers should expect lane-level pricing to matter more than broad market averages as regional conditions continue to diverge.

Class 8 Carrier Authority Trends

Key takeaway: Capacity growth accelerated significantly in August.

August recorded 3,487 new or reinstated carrier authorities against 1,470 revocations, resulting in a net gain of 2,017. The increase is a logical response to the stronger rate environment that has developed throughout 2026, with rates still approximately 38% to 42% above year-ago levels across all three equipment types.August’s modest month-over-month rate declines do little to change that broader incentive. Elevated pricing is creating an opportunity for carriers to enter or return to the market, and the authority data suggests capacity is beginning to respond. The key question is whether that growth continues long enough to meaningfully narrow the supply-demand gap and pressure rates from their elevated year-over-year levels.
